26th Annual Barbara Boggs Sigmund Awards Event Honoring Elizabeth Smart

Honoring Elizabeth Smart, Child Prevention Abduction Advocate & Victim of Child Abduction

Thursday May 12th, 2022 via Zoom

Womanspace is privileged to honor Elizabeth Smart, for her efforts advocating to prevent child abduction and find hope and healing after a traumatic event.

The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002, and her captors controlled her by threatening to kill her and her family if she tried to escape. Fortunately, the police safely returned Elizabeth back to her family on March 12, 2003, after being held a prisoner for 9 grueling months.

Through this traumatic experience, Elizabeth has become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs, and National legislation. Elizabeth triumphantly testified before her captor and the world about the very private nightmare she suffered during her abduction, which led to conviction.

The Founder of the “Elizabeth Smart Foundation”, Elizabeth has also helped promote The National AMBER Alert, The Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and other safety legislation to help prevent abductions.

Elizabeth has chronicled her experiences in the New York Times best-selling book, “My Story.” In addition, she and other abduction survivors worked with the Department of Justice to create a survivors guide, entitled, “You’re Not Alone: The Journey From Abduction to Empowerment.” This guide is meant to encourage children who have gone through similar experiences not to give up but to know that there is hope for a rewarding life.

Elizabeth has recently released a new powerful and inspiring book about what it takes to overcome trauma, find the strength to move on, and reclaim one’s life. “Where There’s Hope” is the result of Elizabeth’s mission: It is both an up-close-and-personal glimpse into her healing process and a heartfelt how-to guide for readers to make peace with the past and embrace the future.

Help light up the community with Womanspace for our 18th Annual Communities of Light™

December 2, 2019

Link up – Illuminate- Light

During the winter solstice in December, Communities of Light™ (COL) candles line the streets of central New Jersey – a powerful symbol of hope for men, women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in our community. Communities of Light raises awareness of the services available to help those victims in Mercer County. The candles come from luminary kits which help spread our important message that Peace Begins at Home.

We’re excited to announce that the members of the Mercer County Police Chiefs Association will serve as our 18th Annual Communities of Light™ Peace Begins At Home Honorary Chairs. Without our close association with them, we could not be able to assist and advocate for our clients as seamlessly.  Our 2019 Honorary Chairs are: Chief Brian Caloiaro, Director Sheilah Coley, Chief Robert Garofalo, Chief James Geary, Chief Frank Gendron, Chief Timothy Grant, Sheriff John “Jack” Kemler, Chief Lance Maloney, Chief Tracey McKeown, Director William Meytrott, Chief Christopher Nitti, Executive Director Paul Ominsky, Prosecutor Angelo Onofri, Chief John Stemler III, Chief James Stevens,  and Chief Nicholas Sutter.

The Communities of Light campaign occurs every October in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Beginning with our launch event on October 22, we encourage businesses, neighborhoods, and community organizations to purchase luminary kits, raise awareness of Womanspace’s services, and spread the message that “Peace Begins at Home.” The campaign concludes with a countywide luminary lighting on December 2, which serves as a powerful symbol of hope for those impacted by domestic and sexual violence in Mercer County.

Womanspace launched our 2019 Communities of Light™ Peace Begins At Home campaign with an event reception on October 22 at 5:30pm at Terhune Orchards in Princeton, NJ. Approximately 125 supporters attended the launch, which included recognition of volunteers and our Honorary Chairs- the Members of the Mercer County Police Chiefs Association. Guests enjoyed delicious food and desserts from D’Angelo’s Italian Market, McCaffrey’s Food Market, Milk n’ Cookies, and Terhune Orchards, and music by local artist, David Brahinsky and the Two Friends.

Communities of Light Committee Chair Denise Taylor stated, “If just one candle could be life changing for one victim of sexual assault, domestic violence or human trafficking imagine the impact of thousands of candles lighting up within Mercer County.”

This annual event marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October). The campaign will culminate in the Communities of Light Luminary Lighting Event on December 2, 2019, which includes hundreds of individual participants and community groups throughout the 12 municipalities in Mercer County.
