Thank you for making Mercer County so bright on December 7!

Thank you to all who participated!

On Monday, December 7th at dusk, Mercer County shone brightly for the 19th Annual Communities of Light. We saw a tremendous outpouring of community support around the county. This event culminated with lightings in municipalities, businesses, neighborhoods, and individuals. Despite the global health crisis at hand, we were able to illuminate the streets and keep everyone’s health and well being in mind. We would also like to thank New Jersey Buzz for allowing us to share this event with everyone at home by live streaming town lightings.

Once again, thank you so much to all that participated. This event serves as a powerful symbol of hope in our community and spreads the message that Peace Begins at Home.

Womanspace Earns a “Give with Confidence” 100/100 Rating From Charity Navigator!

We’re excited to share some news! Womanspace has been evaluated by Charity Navigator through their revolutionary Encompass Rating System and received a 100 out of 100 rating!

The Encompass Rating System is a comprehensive evaluation tool that analyzes nonprofit performance based on four key indicators. In July 2020, Charity Navigator released the first indicator, Finance & Accountability, to highlight nonprofit organizations demonstrating fiscal responsibility.

This milestone achievement for Womanspace couldn’t have happened without you and your support. Thank you for being part of our family as clients, funders, and volunteers. Your trust in us is what makes the difference to us and the men, women and children we serve.

You can find our Charity Navigator Encompass rating here and learn more about Charity Navigator and the Encompass Rating System on their website.

In addition, we just wrapped up our First Annual No Show Event – we raised $8,000! We want to thank our community for helping us make this new event so successful. We couldn’t do what we do without you!

All the best,
Womanspace

Womanspace’s First Annual No Show Event!

What if we asked you to stay in your coziest pajamas or yoga gear, no need to shower or put on make up and no need to hit the gym to fit into your dress, since the quarantine 10 is not going anywhere fast?

Well, we are asking you to do just this! Womanspace cordially invites you to our First Annual No Show Event on August 15, 2020. Entrance fee is whatever you can donate and attendance is strictly forbidden. While everyone has been quarantining, we have continued to run our 24/7 safe house along with our transitional housing, and three hotlines. Our counselors have been working with their clients and are already back at the office.

Unfortunately, we have had to reschedule our Annual Barbara Boggs Sigmund Awards Event for the second time to May 2o, 2021. Due to this postponement, there is a large deficit in our budget that our First Annual No Show Event will hopefully recover. What sounds better than NOT going to an event, and not having to figure out what to wear, who is going to watch the kids and uh oh, the gym still isn’t open.

Click on this link from now until August 15th, the day of the nonevent and give what you can in order to not have to leave the house!

Hope to NOT see you there! Stay healthy, safe and cozy.

Best,

Womanspace

UPDATE: Barbara Boggs Signmund Award Event Postponed

Dear All,

We continue to work in unprecedented times. COVID-19 has changed the world as we know it, and we are all still learning to adapt to this new reality. As we continue to listen to the expert’s recommendations, we at Womanspace know we must do our best for the health and wellness of our community.

The 26th Annual BBS Award Event was previously rescheduled for October of this year (2020). However, we do not feel that it would be wise, or safe, to host such a large gathering in the not so distant future. For the good of everyone, we have chosen to further postpone our 26th BBS Award Event. The new date for BBS will be Thursday, May 20th, 2021 at the Princeton Marriott, honoring Elizabeth Smart.

As stated before, if you have already gotten tickets or done a sponsorship, there is no need to worry – they will automatically apply to the new date. Unfortunately, we are unable to give refunds. If you are unable to attend the new date you can use the price paid as a donation, share them with a friend, or donate them back to Womanspace for our clients to use.

As we finalize the details for the new date, we will reach out and share more information with you. We encourage you to follow our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages for updates.

At Womanspace, we are always here for you. Should you have administrative questions, please respond to this email or email us at info@womanspace.org. For emergencies, we are available 24/7 via our hotlines, local 609-394-9000; statewide 800-572-SAFE. For specific questions regarding our services, contact our hotlines. Your call will be answered by an experienced and trained Womanspace staff member.

Be on the lookout for our next upcoming event, Womanspace’s First Annual No Show Event on August 15th, 2020, where attendance is strongly forbidden.

Warm regards and please stay safe!

Womanspace Update

A message from Womanspace Executive Director, Patricia Hart

Hello Friends,

I hope this email finds you and your family healthy and safe. I wanted to write and update you on what is happening at Womanspace in these days of COVID-19 but my first order of business to thank all of you for being so incredibly supportive during this time. Womanspace supporters are among the most generous and caring individuals from community members to volunteers, to Board members and Advisory Council members. We are fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful community.

Womanspace staff have made it possible to never miss a beat in maintaining communication; providing counseling and emergency services; responding to crisis calls and informational inquiries on our hotlines. Since March the Safe House continued the work of responding to survivors at risk, Barbara’s House Transitional Housing maintained a full house of families with case management continuing. Our Counseling and Support Offices closed but every client was able to continue counseling virtually via phone or doxy.me. Our response teams have continued to be available 24/7 to respond via telephone at the time of a crisis working in conjunction with law enforcement. Administrative staff maintained a virtual presence, continuing the work of the organization. We followed all the guidance offered and built a plan around the expert guidance.

Our next phase begins. On July 6, 2020 we will begin the gradual re-opening of our Counseling and Support (CSS) Office. In preparation we have installed plexiglass shields, a state-of-the-art air purifying system and we will stagger the shifts and working schedules of the counselors to allow for social distancing. Clients will be given the option of “in person” counseling sessions or continuing their counseling virtually. Anyone coming into the building will be doing so by appointment only and will be reminded that we will require masks at all times and social distancing. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the building. All surfaces will be routinely sanitized, and the cleaning crew will come in three times a week to enhance the cleanliness of the building common areas. A no-contact thermometer will be available for individuals who wish to use them. All precautions are being taken to ensure a safe re-entry.

Like everyone, this pandemic has challenged Womanspace to be the best they can be, to offer services in creative modalities that comply with all guidelines for health and safety and confidentiality. The staff of Womanspace has risen to the challenge without hesitation. I am proud that the Womanspace team that is extraordinary in their commitment, work ethic and belief in our mission. A special thank our clients who have been patient and understanding as we have moved through this past almost four months.

Most importantly, we remain available 24/7 on our hotlines 609-394-9000; available for counseling 609-394-2532; administrative questions 609-394-0136 or if you want to live chat, visit our website www.womanspace.org and click on the “Chat Now” link to speak to one of us. You can also email us at info@womanspace.org.

To help us maintain the costs of these services during COVID-19 and beyond, please consider clicking the “Donate Today” button below.

With much gratitude I close and say thank you for your amazing support.

With Warm Regards,
Patricia M. Hart, M.S.W., LCSW
Executive Director

Womanspace’s Giving Tuesday Update

May 8, 2020 – As a result of Giving Tuesday Now, Womanspace is pleased to announce an outpouring of community response. In 48 hours, Womanspace raised over $5,000 from individual donors, board members, and businesses. The Womanspace board had 100% participation and matched donor gifts.

Womanspace is also honored to announce that it has been the recipient of a number of grants in the recent weeks. Womanspace has received grants from the Lawrence Township Community Foundation as well as the Princeton Area Community Foundation. Additionally, Amazon has donated $2,500 worth of gift cards.

Womanspace is still fully operating its Emergency Safe House, Transitional Housing, and hotlines. The money raised will be used for these programs and more. We are unable to accept physical donations at this time but encourage individuals to donate on our website if possible.

In compliance with Governor Murphy’s Executive Order No. 138 extending New Jersey’s “Stay at Home” order, Womanspace’s Administrative and Counseling Offices will remain closed. For administrative matters, phone messages will be checked regularly and emails can be sent to info@womanspace.org, which will be checked regularly. For more information, we encourage individuals to follow our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages (Womanspaceinc) and website. We will continue to monitor the situation and take directions from the Governor’s office.

Help Womanspace continue to achieve our mission

Dear Womanspace Supporters,

We are living in an unprecedented, frightening moment in time right now. This virus is raising the stakes for domestic violence and sexual assault support services all across the country including ours. We scramble to adapt to a new normal full of restrictions and new directives that shift each day and vary from state to state. Currently, while our Administration and Counseling offices are closed, our Safe House, Transitional Housing and three Hotlines are fully operational and serving our clients. Our Counseling office is providing ongoing counseling via phone and looking into other platforms with which to work with clients confidentially. Clients report a critical need to continue their counseling and we anticipate the demand for service will only increase. Victims of violence are currently isolated in their homes where they are unable to escape the source of their fear during this quarantine. With this concern we make every effort to maintain a connection with clients during these restrictions and when the “Stay at Home” order is lifted we believe our doors will open to that increased demand for service.

With the arrival of the coronavirus, we made the difficult but only safe decision to postpone our biggest fundraising event, the Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award Dinner until October. This postponement creates the potential for a large deficit in this fiscal year. We have unfortunately also heard from some past grantees who are delaying any award process as their own fiscal position becomes unpredictable.

Even with the anticipation of huge deficits in our fiscal outlook, we must continue to serve the vulnerable clients who depend on us, now more than ever. Emergency Services is the largest of our programs and consists of our Safe House and 3 Hotlines all of which are available 24/7, 365 days a year. We have four families currently in our Safe House with six children under the age of ten. We need to be prepared to accommodate a full house at all times, which means another four families could request shelter at any time. The high quality of our program is made possible by committed professional staff who continue to be available for their shifts without hesitation even in this crisis time. They provide food, shelter, case management, counseling and support in a secure environment. Even during this national health crisis, Womanspace rises to every challenge keeping our families safe. The cost of running Emergency Services is $40,000 a month, $65 per person.

Our Transitional Housing Program, Barbara’s House, is also fully functioning around the clock through the crisis with six families working toward self=sufficiency after fleeing a violent home. As they work hard to accomplish goals they are now hit with COVID-19. Three of the moms have lost their job as a result of the coronavirus and with the lags in unemployment they are left struggling. We strive to provide for their ongoing needs, food, and other necessities. Two families were scheduled to move into their own place in the next month. For now, they will be given extensions as their income has been lost. The cost to operate Barbara’s House is $16,000 per month, a cost of $26 per person each day.

Our work is critical to the health and well-being of our clients. We are here 24-7 and that will continue. We hope you will consider supporting Womanspace in our efforts to keep families safe while they work toward a stability that will allow for a future free of violence.

Please stay home, stay safe and help flatten that curve.
